The National Service Scheme, also known as NSS, is an extension of activities to the higher education system that orients student youth to community service while they are studying in educational institutions under the auspices of the Ministry of Youth Affairs and Sports, Government of India.
NSS (National Service Scheme) Unit of SITE to make the students aware of social responsibilities and dignity of labor and make them self reliant. The programme aims to inculcate social welfare in students, and to provide service to society without bias. NSS volunteers work to ensure that everyone who is needy gets help to enhance their standard of living and lead a life of dignity. In doing so, volunteers learn from people in villages how to lead a good life despite a scarcity of resources. it also provides help in natural and man-made disasters by providing food, clothing and first aid to the disaster victims.
The Motto of NSS “Not Me But You”, reflects the essence of democratic living and upholds the need for self-less service. NSS helps the students develop appreciation to other person’s point of view and also show consideration to other living beings. The philosophy of the NSS is well doctrine in this motto, which underlines/on the belief that the welfare .of an individual is ultimately dependent on the welfare of the society on the whole and therefore, the NSS volunteers shall strive for the well-being of the society.
Camps are held annually, funded by the government of India, and are usually located in a rural village or a city suburb. Volunteers may be involved in such activities as:
There are no predefined or pre-assigned tasks it is left up to the volunteers to provide service in any way that is feasible. Camps typically last between a week and 10 days, although camps for shorter periods are also conducted.
Special Camping forms an integral part of National Service Scheme. It has special appeal to the youth as it provides unique opportunities to the students for group living, collective experience sharing and constant interaction with community. Special camping’s are organized generally on various developmental issues of national importance. In the past the themes of the Special Camping Programmes have been ‘Youth Against Famine’, ‘Youth Against Dirt and Disease’, ‘Youth for Rural Reconstruction’, ‘Youth for Eco-Development’ and ‘Youth for Mass Literacy’, ‘Youth for National Integration & Social Harmony’, “Youth for Sustainable Development with special focus on Watershed Management and Wasteland Development”. The current theme of Special Camp is “Youth for Emergency Interventions and Education”. Every year 50 percent of the volunteers of each NSS unit are expected to participate in special camps which is of ten days duration.

Case study 3: Social awareness programs on National Girl Child Day (2021-22)
SITE NSS Unit conducted awareness programs on “Importance of Education to Girl Students, Crime against Girls, Health & Hygiene, and Academics during COVID pandemic” on the eve of National Girl Child Day – 2022. Educating the girl students about the importance of education, their legal rights and entitlements and health & hygiene for a healthy growth and well being will strongly influence the family setup they are likely to have in future. In this context, the girl students at SITE NSS proactively participated and encouraged the participants to share their experiences related to the title of the program and advice was given. This helped the SITE students to associate with the girl education activities in their localities.
Case study 4: Blood donation camp (2022-23)
The institute periodically organises Blood donation camps every year in association with Government Blood bank & Red Cross society. A few takeaway contributions are shared. In the year 2021-22, Blood donation camp was organized on Police Commemoration day and more than 200 donors took part from SITE. In the most recent 2022-23, responding to the call given by APSCHE & State NSS Cell, the institute conducted Blood donation camp with 106 donors to fill the shortage of blood in Andhra Pradesh.
